摘要Summary

Capital, projects and relationships can all be present, and a collaboration may still fail to take shape. What needs to be established is whether the resources each party holds can be converted into rights that can be exercised, whether professional capability can become sustained commitment, and whether expected returns match decision rights and the bearing of consequences. Starting from the conditions for execution, this paper discusses the gap between the speed at which capital can enter and the period for which an organisation can commit, and the obligations that arise at launch, during operation and on exit. For resource holders and professionals, the value of a collaboration has to be proven in specific tasks; for wealth owners, the assessment should also cover organisational capacity, degree of dependence and replacement arrangements. Public work that earns professional recognition can be one route into collaboration, alongside established networks.

Five propositions

01

Between access to a project and an investable right lies work that must be completed.

02

A collaboration must balance whether investment can be recovered against whether a mandate can be corrected.

03

Tasks, authority and responsibility need to correspond item by item.

04

When a collaboration is expanded, capacity and responsibility must be verified again; first success cannot simply be extrapolated into long-term reliability.

05

Trust can move from dependence that cannot be tested towards collaborative experience that can be explained and reviewed.

Whether a collaboration holds depends, in the end, on whether the parties can reach workable arrangements for investment, decisions and consequences at launch, during operation and on exit.
